International shipping: the first-send checklist

General practical guidance; destination-specific requirements must be checked with official sources.

Start with the route

Write down the origin, destination, item type, packed weight, dimensions, and desired arrival date. A carrier quote needs these details. A country directory entry does not establish that a service is currently available.

Check the item before choosing a service

Consult your carrier’s current destination rules. Ask about batteries, liquids, food, medicines, valuable goods, and anything potentially hazardous before packing. Confirm any required permits with the relevant authority.

Prepare a shipment record

Keep a record of the goods, quantities, values, recipient details, invoice, and dispatch receipt. Complete the carrier’s required documentation for your specific route and contents. Ask who will pay any import charges.

Follow the handoff

Keep the original tracking number. A destination delivery partner may add another number. Compare timestamps and carrier names before treating a quiet period as a lost parcel.
